Follow these safety precautions from Enbridge Gas (Dominion Energy):

  • Don’t use phones or electronics near the leak.
  • Don’t turn appliances or lights on/off.
  • Don’t smoke or use lighters or matches.
  • Don’t start any vehicles or motors.
  • If leaking natural gas is burning, call 911-don’t attempt to put the fire out yourself.
  • Have your natural gas appliances inspected every year.
  • What should I do if I detect a gas leak?
    • Go outside or leave the area immediately.
    • Call the 24-hour Enbridge Gas emergency number at 1-800-767-1689 or dial 911.
    • Never assume someone has already called.

PG&E Gas safety tips (Pacific Gas & Electric Company)

Safety is our highest priority. Follow these safety tips to keep yourself and your family safe.

  • Never use a flashlight, match or candle to look for gas leaks, and never turn electric switches on or oƯ if you suspect a gas leak.
  • Do not store flammable materials such as mops, brooms, laundry and newspapers near your water heater, furnace, oven, range or any gas appliance.
  • Do not store combustible materials such as paints, solvents and gasoline in the same room as your water heater, furnace, oven, range or any gas appliance.
  • Stock your kitchen with a fire extinguisher.
  • If a pilot light is out, shut oƯ the gas at the appliance gas shutoff valve. Wait five minutes to let gas disperse before trying to relight the appliance pilot light.
  • Keep an adjustable pipe or crescent wrench or other similar tool near your main shutoff valve so you don’t have to search for one in times of emergency.

Prevention:

  • Educate your family members:
    • That natural gas smells like rotten eggs
    • Briefly turn gas burner on without lighting. Do this with an open window. Turn on range hood fan afterward to disperse gas)
    • Discuss what to do when smelling gas with family members
  • Install a natural gas detector (combination natural gas and carbon monoxide detection devices are available)
